What is the Environment Statement?

In REF 2021 each UoA will be required to submit a completed template about the environment for research and enabling impact from 1 August 2013 to 31 July 2020.  Each university will also be required to submit an institutional template outlining wider context and research strategy.  

The REF 2021 environment template will be split into four key sections:

  1. Unit context and structure, research and impact strategy:  This section should provide evidence of the submitted unit’s achievement of strategic aims for research and impact during the assessment period, and details of future strategic aims and goals for research and impact; how these relate to the structure of the unit; and how they will be taken forward.
  2. People:  This section should provide evidence about staffing strategy and staff development within the submitted unit; support mechanisms for, and evidence of the training and supervision of, PGR students; and evidence of how the submitting unit supports and promotes equality and diversity.
  3. Income, infrastructure and facilities:  This section should provide information about the submitted unit’s income, infrastructure and facilities pertaining to research and research impact.
  4. Collaboration and contribution to the research base, economy and society:  This section should provide information about the submitted unit’s research collaborations, networks and partnerships, including relationships with key research users, beneficiaries or audiences; and the wider activities and contributions to the research base, economy and society.

Supporting Data
What indicators can be used to support the Environment Statement?

There are a number of indicators which can be used by the unit of assessment to support the main content of the environment statement.

These include:

  • Research income
  • Number of postgraduate completions
  • Fellowships awarded
  • Data from national surveys such as Postgraduate student surveys
  • Nationality and ethnicity of staff
  • Stonewall Workplace Equality Index
  • Compliancy with the Concordat on Open Research Data
  • Number of KTPs
